Introduction

Hello and welcome to my blog. I am your host WaleAyo and I will be writing on anything that catches my attention. I am female so you can expect the female perspective. I love to read and I love to write. I am currently a student of Education and English at Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria. I am from a family of academics with both parents in the teaching profession. I am the first of two kids and the only female. Basically, I am from a typical middle class family living in Nigeria.

Like I mentioned earlier, I love to write and this blog is one way of fulfilling that dream of mine to write. I hope we have as much fun as possible and we learn from each other as we continue to share ideas on life, living, writing in this generation. So I have a theory ( just hear me out). I've never been an ambitious person. When I was a kid our teachers used to ask us what we wanted to become, and believe me each child wanted to be the one doctor that would cure cancer or the lawyer that would be known everywhere or become the President of the Federal Republic. I am not as confident as people think I am. I am not as self reliant as people think I am. I am just a girl like any other, with hopes and fears and a desire to be loved. I used to be the girl who decorated the pillows with her tears, the girl so afraid to hope, she never tried. I wished I was never born. I felt inferior and unloved. I once cried so much I lost my voice but everyone just thought I was ill. You know how when you are quiet people just fill things in without asking you ( yeah that was me), I never explained things to people.  The way I felt at that time gave me the empathy I have today. Redefining and Reconceptualizing Beauty

In the wake of the recent sexual assault scandal that  rocked the world, I have been thinking a lot about what beauty means to me. So often we find ourselves looking in the mirror and condemning something we have worn or an hairstyle we have made because we think it won't be beautiful to other people, but really who makes these rules? Who decides what is and is not beautiful. Recently while watching one of my favourite shows, The Real, Loni, one of the hosts, commented on this. She was in tears over how brutal 'women' had been to a friend who wore what she could afford to a red carpet. She continued, saying, that if she were to remove her own wig on the show, a lot of people would laugh at her saying she was not beautiful. It got me thinking about what we females do to support this patriarchal, sexualized society.
